The Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) and the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) of UK have issued new procedures to combat the security issues of the Internet of Things. Already today, IoT technology is implemented in many homes throughout the UK. However, both manufacturers and customers have failed to address the data security threats IoT devices might impose. The aim of the new code of practice is to support all parties involved in the development, manufacturing, and retail of consumer IoT with a set of guidelines to ensure that products are secure by design and to make it easier for people to stay secure in the digital world.

The guidelines are voluntary, however, in case of a security breach, the guidelines may be regarded as a reference to evaluate compliance with information seucirty and data protection laws.
